The Rulebook 2.0 — Part Two
almost 3 years ago – Sat, May 22, 2021 at 10:40:41 AM

Urbi et Orbi!

Salvus Sis! A message from Alice.

An honorable human’s everyday choice is between a path of promptness or a road of diligence. Picking one of them is a fight for dignity, even if all is left is just a pure sense of duty. And it never gets easier.

While preparing our new Add-Ons on KS, we received quite a pile of messages from you about the Campaign part of Rulebook 2.0. We looked at it with our faded rheumy eyes and decided to change our priority. As a result of a bounteous number of Deus lo Vult Battles played, here it is. The Rulebook 2.0 Second Part, Campaign Mode!

As we asked about the previous primary Duel Mode, please print it (the Campaign Rules 2.0 simplified version is here). Try these rules yourself and ask us your questions. Please, let us know if something needs to be fixed before the final release. Because it is the time when the official prints will be ready to become a glossy factory-printed booklet, and the translations will start to roll out with the glorious help of some of you.

The cards, special tokens, and some new rivalry rules are waiting on those pages. However, there are a few box items left unmentioned, but we know that, and it’s why the updates about them are coming as the additional rules in the future.

Anticipated to hear your comments and hope you will rejoice in playing the game!

The Rulebook 2.0 — Part One

Urbi et Orbi!

Salvus Sis! A message from Alice.

As you noticed, we delayed our long waited campaign. As weak and paltry human beings we were drawn into the maelstrom of 2020 events and nothing could have been done as planned. The ongoing worldwide pestilence made our game testings painfully long.

Meanwhile, during the holiday season, I was coping with the deepening darkness, looking at our game manuscripts, sometimes staring in the window where a blizzard had long covered Mike’s tracks with snow. Warming the frozen inkwell in my palms, keeping pale candlelight alive I was rewriting the Rulebook.

I am very thankful for having our players at my side, besides keeping the distance and being on other continents. Special kudos go to our BGG supporter Christophe Mallard for the example of clear and adequate game rules.

Our carrier pigeons constantly were frozen on the way, but fortunately not all of them. So I, Terry, and Mike Jr managed to combine all the words and pictures and today we want to present you the first part of them, the Duel Rulebook 2.0! We want you to download and print them, check them, and ask your questions. Maybe something needs to be fixed before the final release, translations, and prints? Tell us!

After some time (not naming dates this time), we're gonna do the same with Campaign rules right after kicking off the Deck of Deeds Campaign here. And then print them, making it possible to be ordered with some of our next addons. Then we'll compile the whole thing together, making it available for ordering as a nice and glossy factory-printed booklet.

Forgive our souls for making you wait for so long. Hope to hear your comments on the Rulebook and may God bless you all. Stay safe and play the game.

One Farewell, One Announcement & 1st Deck P&P

Urbi et Orbi!

Pax Vobiscum! Mike is here, once again.

It's been a while since the last time we've met, and only God knows how long it will take until the next ones, for it is a time for me to bid my goodbyes for now.

I've spent the best two years of my life in this Gilded Crusade of ours, I've made hundreds of friends, I've gained my confidence, I've pushed my limits, I've won this Crusade - but I've still lost it. Lost not because we were inept or negligent (though we actually were), but because this world is not a particularly fair and square place for everyone, and it takes too much for all sorts of the transaction costs and overheads to bring your game to life when you're a three-man team from a third-world country. This journey took everything I had, yet it gave me a purpose, a new Crusade to call for, and a next adventure that waits for me ahead.

For the time being, this journey will take all over me, so I'll be entirely out of reach. Eventually, I'll be back with something incredible, but until then, there will be Terry, Alice, and Mike Jr to keep rolling with all our plans (which still are huge, btw. Full Rulebook, Decks of Deeds Add-Ons, and, of course,  2nd Edition). Please be kind to them; it won't be easy to manage it all without me, but I know they're gonna make it.

Thank all of you, O Noble Brethren of mine! For all the support you were giving me, for your hard-earned money spent on my nonsense of a game, for all the superpowers this adventure granted me with! Be blessed, love each other, and remember to wear a face mask in public places!

(now I'm passing the mic to Alice and leaving the building, but you can follow me on Twitter to keep an eye on what I'm up to)

Deus Lo Vult!

Aааааnd here we are. Today we’re stepping in the shoes of the great man, our beloved noble old Mike. The new page of our Story has started and we’ve prepared good surprises to celebrate the so close ending of the Plague year.

First of all, we are happy to announce the start of the Deck of Deeds 1st Season Campaign. It will include three first decks with Deeds quests for upgrading every kind of Unit. Your armies have never had such challenges full of courage and madness at the same time!

The campaign will start on the 24th of November, and before that, we wanna offer you to test the First Deck in Print-and-Play version. Download the file right here, print 2-4 copies of each card, fold them and glue.

The Card Anatomy

As we said before, each card will feature a specific quest, or as we call it - the Deed. The Deed Card contains:

  • The task/quest itself (Read it carefully!);
  • The number of Glory Points (from 1 to 3) the Player can get from completing the Deed - the main Reward. It is visible by the colour/class of the Deed;
  • An upgrade to the Army Unit of a specific kind - as a bonus Reward;
  • A scourge that awaits the Player who failed to complete the Deed.
The Deed Card Anatomy

 There are three classes of Deeds:

  •  Golden colour = Epic Deed
        It grants three Glory Points and an ultimate upgrade but suggests an outstanding challenge and severe penalty;

  •  Silver colour = Mediocre Deed
        It gives two Glory Points with a decent bonus as a reward for dealing with moderate problems and mild penalties;

  •  Brown colour = Feeble Deed
        This one offers a puny reward of a single Glory Point with a ridiculous bonus upgrade and often a silly, humiliating punishment.

How to Play

The Deck of Deeds DLC is meant to be played in the Campaign mode. Both Duel and Campaign Modes share the same core mechanics, which means Players will be competing in Battles ending with the last Coin secured. But now their main goal is to be the first one, who reaches the Glory Points goal. So you will play Battle after Battle until this goal is reached by one of the Players.

Let’s start with 5 Glory Points as a goal with the First P&P Deck.

So, at the beginning of the game do the next steps:

  1. Set the game as usual, but with Jerusalem city setup;
  2. Set the Saracen units;
  3. Choose which Amenities will be Played, but you should always have a Latrine in the game;
  4. Put the printed cards into a bag, hat or box and let each Player take;
  5. You can decide to play with showing Deeds to each other, or hide them and reveal at the end of the Battle;
  6. You can later change the Deed you got randomly by spending 3 coins and take another random card from the deck.

If the Player completes the Deed until the end of the Battle, (s)he gets the Rewards. Battles are ending just like in the Duel game - when all the Coins in the game are secured.

If the Battle ends and the Deed is not completed, the Player gets punished and takes a Scourge for the next Battle.

The Rewards are cumulative and constant (they last till the end of your Crusade), while the Scourges last for the next Battle only.

Use the Card Back

The back of the DoD cards is very useful. You can use a coin (or any favourite small item) to count the numbers of anything, you need to complete the Deed. Each time you do something for your Crusade, you count it on the card back.

Example: Clean Latrine 10 times spending Moves and/or Coins.

And so, it was a unique and emotional update, wasn’t it? We hope you enjoyed it.

Now have fun playing the first deck and share your thoughts with us! See you soon during the campaign!

2nd Anniversary News: Campaign Rules, 2nd Edition, Online And Offline DLCs And More!
almost 4 years ago – Mon, Jul 20, 2020 at 12:10:52 AM

Urbi et Orbi!

Pax Vobiscum! Mike is here, or, at least, here's what left of him after this excruciating fulfillment marathon, which seems, by the grace of Heavens, to be over. There are few replacement boxes still bound for their owners, but that's pretty much it, our promise is done being fulfilled. It took two years, right on this very day.

broke, not broken!

Two years long run came to its end. We're tired, exhausted,  went nearly broke - but not broken. Let us show you where we are and where we're going to, as there's a lot of stuff going on in our life besides just the suffering itself. But wait! Here goes the anniversary present for everyone:

click me!

Yes, right! It's the official "Deus Lo Vult" Tabletop Simulator DLC! It's free, it's campaign-ready, it's social-distancing, it's quarantine-friendly, and also it features the 2nd Edition Units art! You can download it right here

This present is a single-handed earnest and industrious endeavor of our new game design rock star, good Lady Alice of Warsaw!

With this fair shield-maiden by our side, we've made an enormous leap forward with all our design tasks that were futilely haunting poor old Mike's mind for so many months, namely these:

Deus Lo Vult 2nd Edition is undergoing the pre-press processing and will come to Kickstarter this September (if only we'll last long enough to live to it). It will be more polished, more affordable, more light-weight, and also it features several new mechanics and assets! Of course, we will give a full revamp to the rulebook. If you have more suggestions for the 2nd Ed., please go ahead and let us know!

The Campaign Rules. Our biggest concern here is not to repeat the shameful experience of the Duel Rulebook. Please, don't let us go all fancy again but to keep it as clear and straightforward as possible. Here goes the text file with the necessary illustrations. Please ask your questions right there in comments, or right here, or on FB, or any other way you see as a convenient one, until you'll have none:

It still lacks the description of several DW Cards, because our playtesting routine was utterly destroyed by the quarantine, causing us to resort to the Tabletop Simulator version, which is, like, four times slower than the real one. We're working hard to polish the remained part and bring it to you in our upcoming updates while you'll be scrutinizing this part.

Deck Of Deeds DLC is also in the process of development and testing. It promises to be a lot of fun, allowing you to pimp up your Units to the limit.  Each Unit class will have its own Deck, featuring nine unique upgrades that completely change the game rules. Stone-hurling Pilgrims, Shield-Bashing Knights, Archers making melee attacks, and Catapults throwing your loot straight to the Camp and airborne-deploying your troops anywhere on the board will blow up the yet unblown areas of your mind (if there are any left)! But you'll need to perform a specific heroic deed to achieve it, and woe is you if you fail, for painful scourges will be the punishment for the negligent, crippling them instead of improving!

We'll have an exclusive update featuring them as PnP DLC later this month when we'll have some fancy texts on them, but I can't help myself sharing the art with you right now:

Elephant is notorious for its thick hide. Hijack one to make the boots that made for walking and get an extra Move!
dress up your Pilgrims and they will never get cold on winter nights!
Sanitation is crucial in Campaign Mode, but only Pilgrims can clean the Latrine for free. Thus, the more Units trained for Latrine Duty you have, the less Cholera is there! Pavese wheelbarrow to the help!
Upgraded Catapult delivers your loot right to your Camp. Personnel's caution is strongly recommended!
Toss your Units from the catapult right into enemy orders! Death from above!
"A samurai without a sword is like a samurai with one, but only without one". Upgrade your Knight to beat the shield out of enemies!

Long story short, we have 72 of these being designed and playtested at the moment given. Will bring them on Kickstarter quite soon, because we won't manage it without your support.

And, last but not least - we'll start selling bundles tomorrow; there will be two of them:

  • Full Set (Gilded Box + All Add-Ons) for $149 with free shipping for the US and EU;
  • All-Stars (All Add-Ons) for $79 with free shipping for the US and EU;

These are the lowest prices we can ever do. Buy a gift for your friend before we ought to burn it all because soon we'll have no money to pay for the warehousing! If you've already bought the whole bundle for a full price from our online store, please contact me and we'll figure out what we can do to not make you feel fooled around because of that.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your order - please, email Terry at [email protected], he's always there for you to help!

That's it for today, see y'all in the Campaign Rules comments section! Play online, wear mask, wash your hands, exercise social distancing and be kind to each other!
